Spring is the perfect time to refresh your skincare routine. As the weather becomes warmer and the days get longer, our skin can experience changes in oil production, hydration, sensitivity and sun exposure. In South Africa, where UV levels can be particularly high, taking care of your skin during spring is especially important.

1. Don’t skip sunscreen

One of the most important steps in a spring skincare routine is daily sunscreen. Even when it isn’t extremely hot or the sky is cloudy, UV rays can still affect your skin.

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and apply it every morning to your face, neck, ears and other exposed areas. If you spend time outdoors, reapply throughout the day, particularly after sweating or swimming.

2. Keep your skin hydrated

Warmer temperatures can lead to increased water loss from the skin, while changes in humidity can make some skin types feel dry or tight.

Use a moisturiser suited to your skin type. Lightweight, gel-based moisturisers can feel comfortable on oily or combination skin, while richer creams may work better for dry skin. Remember that oily skin still needs hydration.

3. Cleanse gently

Spring can bring more sweating, outdoor activity and exposure to dust and environmental pollutants. Cleansing helps remove sweat, sunscreen and buildup from the skin.

However, avoid harsh cleansers or scrubbing too aggressively. Over-cleansing can damage the skin barrier and leave your skin feeling dry, irritated or sensitive.

4. Give your skin some extra protection outdoors

Spring often means more time outside — whether you’re going to the beach, enjoying a braai, exercising or simply spending time in the sunshine.

Along with sunscreen, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and protective clothing, and seek shade when the sun is strongest.

5. Be careful with exfoliation

Exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling smoother, but more is not necessarily better. Excessive exfoliation can cause irritation and weaken your skin barrier.

If you use exfoliating acids or scrubs, introduce them gradually and avoid using several strong exfoliating products at the same time.

6. Pay attention to your lips and body

Your skincare routine shouldn’t stop at your face. Use a moisturising body lotion, particularly on areas that become dry, and remember to protect your lips with a lip balm that contains SPF.

Hands, ears, neck and the tops of your feet are also commonly forgotten when applying sunscreen.

7. Keep your routine simple

You don’t need dozens of products to have healthy-looking skin. A simple routine can be highly effective:

Morning:

Cleanser → Moisturiser → Sunscreen

Evening:

Cleanser → Treatment (if needed) → Moisturiser

Introduce new products one at a time so you can see how your skin responds.
